A Joint Effort to Drive Change
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are of growing importance and increasingly affect the health of the population in Ghana. CVDs influence quality of life negatively, lead to chronic morbidity and mortality and in this way also hinder the economic development of the country.
To ensure effective and high-quality prevention and management of these diseases the Ghanaian Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Korle-Bu University Teaching Hospital, the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the German Company Bayer AG decided to join forces, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding and established the Ghana Heart Initiative in 2019.

In consultation with the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, a group of medical specialists from various Ghanaian health facilities collaborated with key health sector stakeholders and GIZ experts. Together, they formulated a set of practical and structured guidelines tailored to the different levels of care within the Ghanaian health system.

Implemented in close cooperation with the Ghanaian Ministry of Health as well as the Ghana Health Service, the GHI seeks to sustainably improve the treatment standards, capacity of health professionals as well as data management on CVDs
